Elizabeth S. Hughes joined Gess Mattingly & Atchison in 1991. Her practice is devoted primarily to employment law and litigation. In addition to employment law, her litigation practice encompasses criminal law (in both state and federal courts, including juvenile, misdemeanor and felony cases), domestic relations, general business litigation and appeals. She represents both plaintiffs and defendants in these areas.

Elizabeth served as President of the Fayette County Bar Association in 2004-2005 and served as an officer and director of that organization from 1998 through 2006. She is currently the Vice President of the Fayette County Bar Foundation, a not-for-profit entity which supports law-related charities and projects in the community through the award of grants.

By appointment of the Kentucky Supreme Court, Elizabeth has served since 2002 as a member of the seven person Kentucky Board of Bar Examiners, charged with the responsibility of writing and grading the Kentucky Bar Exam, and has been its Secretary since 2005. She is also a Kentucky Bar Foundation Life Fellow, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a member of the University of Kentucky College of Law Alumni Board of Directors, the Fayette County Pro Bono Program Board of Directors and Legal Aid of the Bluegrass Board of Directors; and currently serves as a member of the Trial Commission of the Kentucky Bar Association.

In addition to her service to the Fayette County Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association and the Kentucky Supreme Court, as well as the University of Kentucky College of Law, Elizabeth has been an active member of numerous committees associated with improving the legal profession, such as the committees which plan the Fayette County Bench and Bar CLE Program; organize and plan the Fayette County Law Day Program; created the Parents’ Education Clinic in Fayette County; and drafted Civil Remedies for Women Victimized by Violence: A Practice Manual for Attorneys on behalf of the Governor’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
